On October 14, 2009, EASTWEST Public Relations organized a media briefing for a major announcement by Avnet Technology Solutions in Beijing. Since Avnet is a publicly traded company, details of the announcement had to remain completely confidential, especially to the media. Only at the briefing, would the journalists be given flash drives containing the press kit, which included the press release announcing that Avnet, Inc. has, with effect from October 5, 2009, acquired a controlling interest in Vanda Group from Hutchinson Whampoa Limited, expanding its presence and customer base across China. EASTWEST began by compiling a list of relevant domestic and international media in China and Beijing who may find this news of interest. For the event, EASTWEST booked a large conference room at the newly built Westin Chaoyang, which was the home of former US President George W. Bush during his trip to Beijing for the 2008 Olympics. Before the October 1 National Holiday, EASTWEST distributed the media invitation, which was met with immediate interest. Following the holiday, more confirmations of attendance came in with a total of 17 confirmed media. The briefing included presentations by KP Tang, president of Avnet Technology Solutions, Asia-Pacific, Alfred Cheng, vice-president of Avnet Technology solutions, Asia-Pacific and Andrew So, managing-director of the Vanda Group. The briefing was followed by a Q&A session and then one-to-one briefings, which included journalists from Reuters. At 17:00, the press release was distributed over the wires across Asia-Pacific in English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Following the briefing, KP Tang was taken to the Bloomberg studios in Beijing for a live on-the-air interview with Susan Li on Asia Business Tonight out of Hong Kong. KP Tang discussed the timing of the acquisition, the opportunities Avnet sees in Asia and future plans for the company. In all in, the event was seen as a big win for Avnet as it garnered them with coverage across Asia-Pacific, including coverage and interviews by Reuters and Bloomberg Asia-Pacific.
