My Maiden Experience (thus Far) In The PR Industry

My maiden experience (thus far) in the PR industry

Imagine beinglost in an unfamiliar place, with only your will and determination to get out of it – that was how it felt when I entered the PR industry, or rather the working life for the first time. Time flies and it’s already been a month since I’ve transited from a fresh university graduate to being part of EASTWEST Public Relations, which opened a door for me to enter the world of PR.

I still remember vividly entering the PR industry with the impression that PR was all about being ‘the face’ of the company/organisation. Well technically, I wasn’t wrong. But the irony of it is little did I know that there was more than meets the eye. It was more than just looking good to and for your clients. However, I would be telling a blatant lie if I say I have not learned a substantial amount of knowledge so far. Being a greenhorn initially in almost everything, I can now say in confidence that I know how to:

  • Create media pitches
  • Do media monitoring
  • Write and distribute press releases
  • Write reports
  • Write transcripts
  • Create social media recommendations
  • Content creation for presentations
  • Compile media lists for the company and its clients

These things may look simple, but it takes some effort to grasp the gist of it. Definitely I’m a master of none and it is still ‘work in progress’, but it has been a very eye-opening and positive experience for me so far. Of course, having ample guidance as well as having a great team that creates a great environment to work with, makes all the difference. Slowly but surely, I got my head in the game and embrace the grind.

I am pretty sure that what I’ve experienced so far here is just the tip of the iceberg, but as the saying goes, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. I will only become better at the end of my stint at EASTWEST PR. I will continue to embrace the grind.
