Top Tools: Fiverr

For this week’s top tool we dip into the freelancer section of the TAD|pr Directory ad look at probably the biggest freelancer marketplace Fiverr.

Fiverr was founded in 2010 by Micha Kaufman and Shai Wininger, two Israeli entrepreneurs who came up with the concept of a marketplace that would provide a platform for people to buy and sell a variety of digital services offered by freelance contractors.
The type of gigs available on fiverr range from writing, translation, graphic design, video editing and programming.

The freelancer projects and services offered on Fiverr are called ‘Gigs’ and start, unsurprisingly, at US$5, but can go up to thousands of dollars with large scale projects, highly specialised skills, and ‘add on’ gig extras.

Two years after its launch fiverr was hosting 1.3 million Gigs.  The website Fiverr.com has been ranked among the top 100 most popular sites in the United States and top 200 in the world since 2013.

With so many Gigs on offer, you can imagine that there are countless ways that you can use fiverr to support your business, and I will discuss some of those a bit later.  But I would like to make the point that you can also use fiverr to make money by selling your own services. Yes, anyone can signup an be a seller on Fiverr.  But, due to the site’s popularity it can be an extremely competitive marketplace. and gaining trust of buyers can be a challenge for new sellers.

The website itself is simple and easy to navigate. The main categories of services offered on the platform are Graphics & Design, Digital Marketing, Writing & Translation, Video & Animation, Music and Audio, Programming and Tech, Business, Lifestyle and those sorted by specific industries.

The lifestyle section can be eye opening with promises of viral videos, messages from Jesus, and old men with plastic bananas – who will record ‘any message you want’, don’t believe me, I dare you to step into the lifestyle category.

But there is some great value and really useful gigs to support small and large businesses alike.

You must be registered to buy (or Sell) on fiverr but signing up is free

You can find a Gig  by browsing the categories, or by entering the keywords for what you are looking for.  You can select from  Pro services, local sellers, or online sellers. And you can further filter your search results by Budget or time.

Once you find the Gig you are looking for you can click it for more information. you should always closely check the description of the service, the seller’s portfolio or  work samples and of course, the pricing options.

You can contacting the seller before ordering, to ask any questions and we recommend doing this.

The messaging system is very good and good sellers will be highly communicative while working on your gig and keep you up to date on the progress.

Messages can be viewed through the website, mobile app, or your email. As a copy of messages will also be forwarded to your registered email address, so you will never miss an important message.

You can pay through a prepaid Fiverr account, Paypal, or by credit card. You must pay at the time of placing your order but payment is held in Escrow, by Fiverr, and released to the seller after you confirm you are happy with the completed order.

All purchases on fiverr are subject to a service fee of $2 on purchases up to and including $40, and 5% on purchases above $40.
