What is a backlink?
Why are backlinks important?
Backlinks are an indicator that content on your site is good, worth reading and valuable. Therefore, backlinks are an important factor in SEO and search rankings. If many sites link to the same webpage or website, search engines can determine that the content is worth linking to, and therefore also worth displaying on a SERP(Search Engine Ranking Page – Basically the list of websites that you see after searching on Google).
So, getting a lot of backlinks can have a positive effect on a site’s ranking position or search visibility.
Not All Backlinks are good!
One important point to make is that not all backlinks are good for SEO. In the same way that not all website are equal in quality, not all backlinks are good for your site. In fact over recent years, in an attempt to combat excessive backlink from spammy or poor quality domains, Google has been seen to impose severe penalties website search rankings for ‘paid for links’
That being said, there is a whole industry built around creating backlinks to improve SEO, Google may hate the practice, but done right it can have a huge impact on your site’s performance.
Follow and No Follow
There are 2 categories of backlinks that you can get for your site ‘Follow’ or ‘Do-Follow’ and ‘No Follow’ links. If a website gives you a backlink they can decide to let search engines follow the link to your site and you get the positive impact, or to set it as a ‘No Follow’ link where you do get a mention on their site but search engines will be told not to follow the link to your site. Google can still know that the content is linked and you can still get some SEO benefits, but obviously you want to get a ‘Follow’ link if you can.
What sites give ‘Valuable’ Back links
A site that links to your content will have the most positive impact if it has a high Domain Authority (DA). A company called MOZ developed DA as a measure of site quality. Websites are scored out of 100, with 100 being high authority and 1 being deemed low quality. It is not a measure of the quality of content directly, it is calculated on the volume of traffic, the number of keywords the site ranks for and so on.
Can I buy high quality backlinks?
As I mentioned you can purchase backlinks, Most High DA sites will backlink for a fee, which is usually done as part of a guest post service. You put content on their site, such as an article, and they link back to you. Or the site writes about you, your business, or a piece of content on your site. Obviously Google wants this to be as natural as possible and for there to be real value in the link, that ‘real people’ will benefit from.
The cost of backlinks can vary from £100 to several thousand pounds.
Is building backlinks easy?
It can take a long time to get a backlink on a quality site, you may need to build a real relationship with the site owner and this is often done by companies offering backlink services. Sometimes you will have to ‘pitch’ an article for their blog, or have something of value to offer in return.
It is possible to do this by yourself but knowing what to say, and to who, takes skill and practice. And we do urge caution if you try one of the many services that offer backlinks for a few dollars, as these can really have a devastating effect on your google page ranking, and can be difficult to remove or be very time-consuming to ‘Disavow’.
We only provide genuine, high-quality links and recommend the article/guest post approach and have seen some positive results for our clients.
