Youku and Tudou recently announced their impending partnership where Youku will buy out Tudou for over $1bn. This consolidation is simply one of the many indicators of China organizing its businesses to better compete globally. But what does this all mean for the Online Video landscape, and more importantly the practice of Public Relations, in China? First off, it will mean convenience. Whereas in the past, uploading a video on a Chinese Online Video platform was largely a matter of taste and not performance, now you can be sure that when you upload a video you’re doing it in the right place. You don’t have to worry about whether or not suddenly the site will go down, or the video will be removed, or even that it might be used in a way you didn’t intend. It will also mean that optimizing for Video will be a whole lot easier. You won’t have to second guess yourself that uploading a video to Tudou or Youku will get you noticed easier. With the top two Chinese Online Video platforms now merging together, you can be sure they will streamline the optimization process. This is all just speculation though. What do you think?
